Holding a compass

Trust. It is something that we as human beings wrestle with on a daily basis. In a world where the news is full of heartbreaking stories of violence and suffering, and in a world where the media tells us one thing and people of authority tell us another, it is hard to know whom to listen to and whom to trust. We are a people who are worried and afraid. We see the pain of the past and present, and cannot help but wonder what lies ahead in our future. We try to seek wisdom from our country's leaders, but quite frequently their own political agendas replace the needs of our nation. Despite the prestige that comes with their positions, it is important to remember that they are humans, too, and do not always have all of the answers. We try to discern direction from the media, but our media tends to focus on the negative thoughts and opinions of others instead of uplifting the acts of faith and kindness offered by many. Wouldn't it be refreshing if, in addition to the tragic news stories about the senseless violence around the world, the media shared a heartwarming story about a community offering a prayer vigil for those who had been lost? We try to find words of comfort from our friends and families, but even they sometimes fall short of the mark. They, too, are easily swept up in the chaos of the storms of life. At times, they are just as confused as we are. None of these people, no matter how much we love and respect them, will be able to offer us what we seek. This does not lessen their value as people, but we must remember that only God can give us truth. As of late, I have been struggling to trust in God and His will for my life. In just a few short weeks, I will be packing my bags and heading off to college. Although I am excited to begin a new life in a new place, I cannot help but experience the feelings of doubt and fear that come with moving to an unfamiliar place. I know that this is the place God is calling me to be, but fear continues to have a hold on my heart and I struggle to trust in God's plan for my life. But in spite of my anxieties, I have learned that trusting in God is and always will be the right answer, because He will always lead me to the truth. He alone is the answer to my every doubt and my every anxiety. He alone has the power to answer my questions about suffering in this world. He alone can give me reason to believe that in the midst of the storms of life, true beauty and goodness still exists. Is it easy to trust in Him? Not always. But isn't that what faith is all about? Faith is a matter of believing in what we cannot see, even when it is difficult to do so. Life is not a multiple-choice test, because God is and always will be the answer. God is Truth, and that alone is reason to trust in Him.
